Rams victorious over Rangers on Friday night

The Canterbury Rams rallied in the fourth quarter to snatch a victory from the Super City Rangers on Friday night, winning 100-95 at home.

The Rams were trailing heading into the fourth quarter, but they managed to outscore the Rangers 33-22 over the final 10 minutes to secure an impressive come from behind win.

American import Winston Shepard was huge for the Rams, posting 27 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and three steals on 11-of-16 shooting from the field, while Xavier Thames dropped 22 points on 7-of-22 shooting.

The Rams’ third import, Julian Washburn, also turned in a solid performance, dropping 14 points, four rebounds and three assists in 34 minutes.

Canterbury shot worse than the Rangers across the board, but it was their tremendous effort on the glass that gave them an edge. They won the rebounding battle 50-38, and reeled in a whopping 23 offensive rebounds.

The Rangers clearly lack height, and the Rams took full advantage of that tonight.

Clay Wilson led the way for the Rangers, compiling 21 points in 37 minutes. Okesene Ale was solid in his debut with the Auckland based club, dropping 18 points and 10 rebounds on 4-of-10 shooting (3-of-7 from three).

Dominique Kelman-Poto scored 17 points, while Lindsay Tait turned back the clock with 19 points, nine assists and three steals on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.

The Rangers have a quick turnaround as they’ll face the Nelson Giants on the road tomorrow night, while the Rams aren’t back in action until next Friday against the Southland Sharks.
