The Nelson Giants have crushed the Super City Rangers on Saturday night, grabbing a 117-68 win in their first outing of the season.
Damon Heuir was fantastic for the Giants, recording a game-high 25 points, three rebounds, nine assists and two steals in 29 minutes, shooting 7-of-11 from the field (3-of-7 from three).
Jerry Evans Jr. managed 16 points with four 3-pointers, Finn Delaney posted 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while captain Sam Dempster grabbed 14 rebounds to go with his 12 points.
The Giants dominated from start to finish, and used a balance scoring attack to comfortably dispatch the Rangers tonight.
American import Clay Wilson led the Rangers in scoring, dropping 18 points in 31 minutes of work. Brook Ruscoe scored 11 points, and Dominique Kelman-Poto added 10.
For the second straight night, the Rangers struggled big time on the glass. The Giants grabbed 53 rebounds to the Rangers’ 28, a massive margin that certainly had an impact on the game.
The Rangers lack size in their frontcourt, but have recently signed centre Devon Scott who should provide some help down low. He’s expected to join the team for their next game against the Wellington Saints on Sunday.
The Giants’ 49-point victory is the largest in franchise history. They undoubtedly made a statement with their big win tonight and will surely have their sights set on a championship this season.
Auckland, on the other hand, fall to 0-2 to start their 2018 campaign.
