The Taranaki Mountainairs were too good for the Manawatu Jets on Sunday afternoon, winning 95-69 behind a dominant performance by American import Javonte Douglas.
Douglas finished with a massive stat-line of 28 points, 20 rebounds and six assists in 33 minutes of action, shooting 8-of-17 from the field and 11-of-15 at the line.
Douglas wasn’t the only Air to feast on the Jets, as Xavier Smith notched 18 points, 15 rebounds and four assists, while Roger Woods scored 14 points with 12 rebounds.
The Airs crushed the Jets on the glass, reeling in 72 rebounds to Manawatu’s 47. The Jets really struggled offensively throughout the game, too, hitting just 28 per cent of their field goals and 22 per cent of their 3-pointers.
Daishon Knight led the Jets in scoring with 19 points on 6-of-22 shooting, adding nine rebounds and eight assists in 31 minutes off the bench. Fellow teammate Kuran Iverson shot just 2-of-12 from the field for eight points.
Theo Johnson contributed 12 points and seven rebounds for the Jets.
Today’s outing was the first game for the Jets since 2015. Their roster is mostly made up of local talent, but imports Iverson, Lucas and Knight should be able to help out on a consistent basis once they get comfortable.
The Airs, behind Douglas, should be more competitive this season after their 4-14 2017 campaign. They’re a team to keep an eye.
