The Bay Hawks have toppled the Manawatu Jets 89-74 on Thursday night.
Guard Ethan Rusbatch led the way for Hawke’s Bay, dropping 16 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and 1-of-1 from three.
The young pairing of Mitchell Newton (15 points) and Hyrum Harris (12 points) combined to shoot a tidy 11-of-18 from the field. Newton managed three 3-pointers on the night.
Jamie Skeen, playing in his first game for the Hawks, posted nine points, two rebounds and two assists in 12 minutes of action.
Daishon Knight was again in control of the offense for Manawatu, scoring 22 points (9-of-22 FG) with five rebounds and five assists. Knight played a team-high 39 minutes, too.
Fellow American import Kuran Iverson struggled with foul trouble in the first half, but managed to turn in a solid performance overall. He finished with 18 points and five rebounds on 7-of-14 shooting.
Brandon Lucas added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Jets.
The Jets, like they did in their first outing against the Airs last week, struggled to shoot the ball with any consistency. They shot 38 per cent from the field overall, and just 20 per cent (6-for-30) from three.
The Hawks enjoyed a large deficit on the glass, out-rebounding the Jets 50-35, while also scoring a whopping 52 bench points to the Jets’ 13.
The Hawks’ win takes them to 2-0 on the season and they’ll be back in action again tomorrow night against the Taranaki Mountainairs.
Manawatu don’t play again until next Thursday.
