RECAP: Rams 104, Airs 97

The Canterbury Rams took down the Taranaki Mountainairs in overtime on Sunday afternoon, winning 104-97.

All five of the Rams’ starters were fantastic, combining for all but two of the team’s 104 points.

Tony Tolovae scored 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field, while Xavier Thames dropped 25 points. Thames, however, shot just 8-of-24 from the field in 45 minutes of action.

Winston Shepard compiled an impressive stat-line of 23 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and three steals in 44 minutes, shooting 6-of-15 from the field and 2-of-4 from three.

Julian Washburn amassed 19 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Rams, and Maxwell Darling added 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Rams head coach Mark Dickel played each of his starters over 30 minutes today, with two players getting over 40 minutes. Dickel is working with a young bench and has shown no hesitancy to play his main guys major minutes this season.

Roger Woods led the Airs in scoring with 30 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field (3-of-5 3PT), adding three rebounds, two assists and five steals.

Javonte Douglas managed 20 points and three 3-pointers in 37 minutes, while Xavier Smith scored 14 points and blocked three shots.

Richard Rodger did a bit of everything for Taranaki, posting 14 points, four rebounds, seven assists, three steals and one block on 6-of-10 shooting (2-of-5 3PT).

While the Rams didn’t shoot the ball overly well (44 per cent), they did out-rebound the Airs 48-37 – a likely difference maker in the game.

The Rams move to 2-1 following Sunday’s victory, while the Airs drop to 1-3.
