RECAP: Airs 75, Jets 70

The Taranaki Mountainairs have defeated the Manawatu Jets 75-70 on Thursday night.

The Jets got out to a hot start, leading 21-11 after the first quarter, but the Airs used a steady scoring attack to reel them back in and take the victory.

Alonzo Burton led the way for Taranaki with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists on 7-of-16 shooting (4-of-9 from three).

Javonte Douglas continued his strong play, posting 16 points and 13 rebounds in 27 minutes of play, while Xavier Smith dropped 17 points and 11 rebounds in 35 minutes of play.

American imports Kuran Iverson and Daishon Knight combined to shoot just 13-of-48 for the Jets. They’re the main options on offence for head coach Tim McTamney, but they just couldn’t get going tonight.

Iverson finished with 16 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Knight had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Brandon Lucas added 12 points for Manawatu, and youngster Callum McRae was productive off the bench with eight points and 13 rebounds in 30 minutes.

The Airs shot just 40 per cent from the field overall, but the Jets were much worse with a 32 per cent clip.
