The Canterbury Rams were able to sneak past the Taranaki Mountainairs 80-72 on Saturday night to remain atop of the Sal’s NBL ladder.
The Rams’ starters dealt the most damage yet again for the team. Winston Shepard led the way with 19 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and one steal on 8-of-18 shooting from the field in 38 minutes.
Julian Washburn dropped 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and one block on efficient 7-of-11 shooting in 39 minutes. Xavier Thames managed 15 points and eight rebounds but shot just 4-of-16 from the field, while Maxwell Darling added 13 points and eight rebounds in 33 minutes of work.
Javonte Douglas produced a massive line for the Airs but it wasn’t enough to get his team across the line. He finished with 22 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and one steal on 9-of-22 shooting (1-of-7 3PT) in 37 minutes.
Alonzo Burton scored 20 points on 4-of-15 shooting, adding nine rebounds, two assists and one steal.
It wasn’t a convincing win for the Rams against a short-handed Airs squad but it’s a win nonetheless. They move to 5-1 on the season, while the Airs drop to 2-5.
