The Nelson Giants have secured a massive win over the Wellington Saints on Saturday night, getting the job done in overtime to win 90-87.
The Giants’ win keeps their hopes alive to finish at the top of the Sal’s NBL ladder this season.
Australian guard Damon Heuir was superb for Nelson with 30 points, four rebounds and three assists in 40 minutes of action. He shot 10-of-23 from the field and 6-of-13 from three in what was his most productive game of the year.
Fellow Australian Kyle Adnam also turned in a solid performance, posting 17 points and four assists on 7-of-18 shooting from the floor.
Tohi Smith-Milner contributed 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal on 5-of-7 shooting and 1-of-2 from three in his 26 minutes of work.
All five of the Saints’ starters scored in double figures for the game.
Tall Black Jordan Ngatai led the way with 19 points, six rebounds, two steals and one block in 36 minutes, shooting an impressive 8-of-10 from the field and 1-of-2 from three.
Imports L.J. Peak and Majok Majok each managed 16 points. Majok grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots, topping off a productive night for the big man.
Leon Henry dropped 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists and three steals on 4-of-10 shooting, while Shea Ili had 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Ili, however, shot just 4-of-18 from the field and 0-of-3 from distance.
The Giants are now 13-3 on the season and hot behind the Saints’ heels, who are 14-3. The Sharks aren’t out of the running for the top spot either, sitting at 12-4.
